Routes into midwifery education
Traditionally delivered through a 3- or 4-year university programme.
Application is via UCAS.
Self funded via the Student Loans Company.
Some funding available via the NHS Learning Support Fund:
Training grant £5,000 per academic year
Parental support £2,000 per student per academic year, for students with parental responsibility for at least one child
Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses Reimbursement of excess travel and temporary accommodation costs incurred because of attending a practice placement
Exceptional Support Fund Up to £3,000 per academic year for students who find themselves facing unexpected financial hardship which they are unable to manage by their own actions.
Offer structured training with an employer & lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
Include learning in the workplace & training at college or university.
‘Learn while you earn’: first year apprentices receive at least the National Minimum Wage for apprentices.
Course fees are paid by the employer via the apprenticeship levy.
Currently support comes from Trusts for existing Maternity Support Workers.
3- or 4-year programme.
Available across NEY but not yet available in HNY (possibly Sept 2026).
For registered adult nurses to become registered midwives.
This is an option if you want to become a nurse first.
18–24-month programme.
Salaried as a nurse during training.
Available at University of Hull, University of Bradford and Sheffield Hallam University.
