1st Year Student Midwife - Jess Wardale
Current year of study: 2nd year
What you did prior to studying: I worked as a Veterinary Nurse for 9 years in small animal hospitals. For the last couple of years I also worked in veterinary insurance for a local veterinary practice.
Why you chose midwifery: I experienced a wide range of care throughout my two pregnancies. I had some incredible midwives who had a huge positive impact on my pregnancy journey and my wellbeing, and I wanted to provide the same contribution to other women and birthing people.
What do you love about the midwifery programme: I love so much about it! My cohort are wonderful; I've made some friends for life. The lecturers on my programme are fantastic and couldn't be any more supportive. They're some of our biggest cheerleaders as students. I really enjoy clinical working and expanding my skillset.
Any highlights so far: My biggest reason for coming into midwifery was to be able to support and advocate for service users, no matter what their journey looks like. I want them to feel like they are seen and heard and that they are the most important part of any decision making. I have had opportunities to provide this care, and it is every bit as amazing as I thought it would be. Occasions where service users are happy to see me caring for them in different areas of maternity services are always special - it lets me know I'm doing a good job building trusting relationships.
What you are looking forward to when you qualify: Continuing to advocate for our service users. I look forward to an initial rotational post as a registered midwife in my blues! I also look forward to the continuous learning that this career brings!
